Wolff, Judge Nelson W.
County Judge, Bexar County, Texas
Nelson William Wolff was appointed Bexar County Judge in 2001 and was elected to the office by the voters of Bexar County in November 2002. With his colleagues on the Commissioners Court and at the City, he has worked to promote greater economic development in Bexar County, including the successful efforts to lure Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Sino Swearingen Aircraft and the PGA Village to locate here. For two years in a row, Wolff has presided over reductions in the county tax rate. He has also successfully worked to address our region's transportation and energy challenges by creating the Metropolitan Partnership for Energy and San Antonio Mobility Coalition while serving as its chairman. The effort to restore the Bexar County Courthouse is being led by Judge Wolff and his wife, Tracy, through the Hidalgo Foundation.
In June 2006, Wolff was appointed to a three year term by President George W. Bush to serve on the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation's Advisory Committee, a federal corporation that guarantees pension payments to 44 million Americans.
Wolff served in the State House of Representatives and the Texas Senate from 1970 to 1974. In 1987, Wolff was elected to the San Antonio City Council, and after two terms was twice elected mayor, 1991 – 1995.
As mayor, Wolff led the effort to locate the downtown campus for the University of Texas, to build Wolff Baseball Park, the downtown library, and the new City Hall Chambers. He also led the effort to pass the largest parks bond issue in city history, secured financing and approved convention expansion plans that led to the doubling of the Convention Center.
Mayor, his personal account of the political and economic battles fought in San Antonio during the 1980s and 1990s, was published in 1997. Wolff also is the author of Baseball for Real Men, a book about men playing hard ball during their senior years.
Wolff holds a Bachelor's of Business Administration from St. Mary's University and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from St. Mary's University School of Law. His educational background has helped him excel both in politics and in business.
In 1961, Wolff along with his father and two brothers founded Alamo Enterprises Building Supplies. In 1977, they sold the eight-store chain of building material stores. In 1978 Wolff, along with his two brothers, George and Gary, founded Sun Harvest Farms. In 1999 they sold the nine-store chain of natural foods stores
